When Karin Hofer, Headteacher at the German School of Bilbao, learned that one of her students would be undergoing treatment for several months, she started looking into AV1. After learning more about the solution and seeing its potential in this particular case, she decided to get her team involved.

Karin, who came across No Isolation thanks to Rotary Bilbao, made it clear from the beginning: what mattered most to her was that the student continued to feel part of the school community throughout her treatment.

AV1 arrives at school

Just a few days after that first meeting with No Isolation, the AV1 robot arrived at the school.

For the team, implementation has been a smooth process. The aim was to support the student academically, but above all, to do so in a way that felt personal and meaningful.
"She’s in class just like everyone else, and especially during non-academic activities," says Jacobo de la Sierra, Deputy Head of Administration. "Compared to other solutions we’ve used, the social aspect is much stronger. She’s heard, she’s seen and she’s more present."

What’s surprised them most? That AV1 is not only a tool that brings a student closer to school life, but also just how easy it is to use: “Everything is very straightforward and that’s exactly what makes it special.”

A voice from home

At home, the experience has been calm but filled with enthusiasm.

The student’s mother told us what stood out most was “the versatility of the device, how it can be carried around by classmates, and how easy the app is to use.”
She added: “As a family, it’s been a huge help and a relief that our daughter can stay involved in her school routine, attending lessons like any other pupil, spending time with her friends, and remaining part of the class even when she can’t be there in person.”

The student herself told us what she values most about having AV1 is “being able to stay in touch with my friends and not feel isolated.”

Because when facing something as tough as a serious illness, knowing you’re not alone makes all the difference. Knowing that life continues after treatment, and, best of all, that it continues alongside the people you care about.

Just the beginning
