Our story

No Isolation created AV1 to help educators bring learning and belonging to all children.

How it started

Karen Dolva founded No Isolation in 2015 after meeting a woman, Anna Fi, who has lost her child to cancer. While Anna Fi's daughter was ill, she said the separation from school and normal life isolated her. This led to her suffering severe loneliness on top of the physical pain of illness and treatment.

This set Karen on a course to develop technology to solve this problem.

No Isolation developed AV1 over many months of research and testing. Children, teachers, scientists and St Olav Hospital School helped to develop the technology. Putting experts at the centre of the design process is what helped make AV1 so well-suited to its user group.

The resulting technology is the AV1 solution, which children connect to via the AV1 app. It gives them a live connection to school, so they can learn alongside their peers and maintain a sense of belonging.

This, combined with AV1 Admin and educationalist expertise, is transforming how education systems can address the systemic issue of school absence. Learn more about the AV1 solution.

School absence is one of the biggest challenges for the education system, leading to poorer educational outcomes and reduced life opportunities for affected students. It also puts severe pressure on the budgets and resources of local authorities as more and more students require costly individual support. We believe that technology should be part of the solution to this significant challenge, as is the case in other parts of society.

Our AV1 technology allows local authorities to meet their statutory duties and support students in a cost and resource effective way. 78% of students using AV1 have returned to the classroom, significantly improving learning outcomes and removing the need for continued costly and resource intensive individual support.
