About the session

School authorities have a duty to secure suitable education for children who can’t attend school because of illness. Hospital schools and bedside tuition meet that duty in the short term. The harder challenge is what happens around the learning: the long-term cost and impact of a child becoming disconnected from their school, their peers and their route back.

When a child is out of school for an extended period, the consequences reach beyond the hospital ward.

Disconnection from their school community is a known driver of persistent absence, delayed reintegration, rising special educational and mental health needs, and the need for costly additional support later. Each of these escalate to school authority budgets and caseloads

AV1 addresses this risk at its source. Acting as the child’s eyes, ears and voice in their home classroom, it keeps them connected to their school throughout treatment, so the relationship between child and school stays intact rather than needing to be rebuilt. It also gives hospital schools a practical, shared way to work together, strengthening the link between health and education services.

“When I started using AV1, it was a whole new world. I could do everything like I was there. I could see every corner of the classroom. I could chat with my friends. It meant I could finish the 5th grade and go to the 6th grade.” – Diego, student from Puerto Rico

Why attend?

Real experiences from European hospital schools: How peer educators across Europe keep hospitalized children connected to their friends and learning community, and how they partner with local education authorities.

Practical implementation: How to introduce, fund, and manage the AV1 solution in practice, step by step.

‍

The wider impact: What this connection means for a child’s self-esteem and recovery, the peace of mind it gives families, and how it strengthens hospital school support while fostering empathy, companionship, and a sense of responsibility among classmates.

Daily routines and teacher workload: How AV1 integrates smoothly into normal classroom activity without adding extra pressure or paperwork for teachers.
